Components for Demonstration

The following table includes all the materials needed to execute the demonstration of Newton's Third Law.  Much of the materials can be purchased from Vernier.  To learn about the set up and its explanation please go to Demonstration.

Pasco Dynamics Cart 2

These carts roll with minimized friction, they allow for easy mounting of force sensors and have magnets and Velcro on either end which allows them to stick or be propelled from fixed magnets of opposite polarity.

LabPro Interface 1

This interface is the heart of the data collection. It collects the data, converts the analog signal to a digital one, it's also the power source, and much more. For more info.

Dual-Range Force sensor 2

It allows you to measure the collision forces. It can be set to measure forces up to a maximum of 10 N or 50 N.

Dynamics Track 1

Aluminum track custom made for the Dynamic carts. It has a ruler on its edge, also magnetic stoppers that can be placed anywhere along the track.

LoggerPro Software 1

Allows you to display to collected data, on IBM or Macs, very easily and in a variety of ways.

Computer 1

To display the obtained data.

Fans 1 or more

Preferably 12 V computer fans, they are the most efficient.  1 or more- depends how fast you want the cart to go.

Batteries  8

8x1.5V batteries needed to power the fans (if you are planning to use 12 V fans).

Housing for bateries 1

Plastic casing that hooks up the batteries in series. Very cheap, about $3 CAN., and can be bought in any hardware/electronic store. (Or hook them up in series using wires)

Elastic bands

Needed to mount, and fix, the fans onto the battery casing.

Wire 1-2 ft

Thin wire needed to hook up the fans to the battery pack.  Also use to attach the fans to one another.

Pulley wheel 1

A pulley wheel, attached to a vice, is needed to show Newton's 3rd law with constant acceleration.

Fishing wire 1-2 m
Weights

Varying weights from 50 g to 600 g. Used to place on the carts, to alter their masses and also used with the pulley, to pull the carts.

Nail 1 1 inch nail.
Stand 1

A stand was build to elevate the wires from the force sensors, if the wires are not elevated they will add unwanted tension forces as the carts with the sensors travel along the track.

Note: The Dynamics carts, Dual-Range Force Sensors, LabPro Interface, Dynamics Track, and LoggerPro Software can be bought from Vernier.
