As the current passes through the wire, or coil of wires, a magnetic field is produced.  Such a magnetic field opposes against the permanent magnet set right beside the coil, thus resulting in a force going up or down depends on the right hand rule.  Also, the other important point is that the commutators are two half rings that do not touch each other.  This way, when the motor rotates, the direction of the current will change to the other direction thus keeping the polarity of the electromagnetic force always opposing the permanent magnet.  This is way the motor will keep rotating as long as the electrical power is constantly supplied.

As we apply force on the coil of wire, which means that we either move or rotate it in or through a magnetic field, the reverse process occurs as current it then produced.  This is a process where mechanical energy is transformed into electrical energy.
