cylindrical hollow tube of acrylic with dimensions:
outer diameter 30cm
inner diameter 29cm
height 20cm
another cylindrical hollow tube of acrylic with dimensions:
outer diameter 1.5cm
inner diameter 1cm
height 14cm
acetic acid
syringe
Construction Procedures for Bathyscaph:
Cut the 2 flat sheets of acrylic into two circles with outer diameters of 30cm.
Take one flat, now circular, sheet of acrylic and drill two 1.5cm holes. See the figure
below for the placement of the holes. Only drill holes into one of the sheets of acrylic.
Seal the circular sheet of acrylic, with no drilled holes, to one side of the cylindrical
tube of acrylic. Acetic acid is an excellent compound to seal the acrylic. Simply apply
the acetic acid, using the syringe, to the entire circumference of the cylindrical acrylic
edge and then place the circular acrylic sheet onto it. It should seal within 5 minutes.
Seal the small tube into one of the drilled holes. Allow ~3cm to hangout on one side.
Now seal this sheet of acrylic, with the longer tube facing inside the cylindrical tube,
to the other side of the cylindrical tube of acrylic.
Let the bathyscaph set overnight.
Finally attach the rubber hose to the ~3cm small tube sticking out.
Warning:
We ended up having to attach a small weight to the bottom of our bathyscaph because the
bathyscaph was too light.
