Frequency is a characteristic of all wave phenomena.  Things that exhibit wave phenomenon are all around us:  water in oceans travel as waves, vibrating strings act as waves, and sound and light both travels in waves!  When a wave looks stationary (as in Figure 3), it is called a standing wave.
